Akron: Goodyear is a self- drafted, me- made valentine to my beloved, Akron. It began as an entry for Modern Quilt Guild's Michael Miller Fabrics; Glitz Challenge for QuiltCon16. The pack of metallics arrived and sat on my design area, staring, mocking me for weeks. What to do?? Too many sad Picasso- esque industrial ruins and shitty blimp art. Sauerkraut balls? The Black Keys? A polka dot homage to Chrissie Hynde?
My creative mantra, " When in doubt, cut it up!" kicked in. I was making far too much of this task than I clearly had the time or inclination. Ordered the extra Michael Miller chevron print, Fairy Frost, and the Couture Cotton solids.
Full speed ahead, and all that. Should have read the Challenge rules, again. Explicitly states, "non-challenge prints may only be used for backing and binding." Remember that. Because I didn't.
Rule breaking' badass.
I realized the indiscretion as I was completing the Official QuiltCon16 entry.
Ever almost vomit on your MacBook?
Modern Quilt Guild graciously said to enter it under another category, but explicitly state it is a Michael Miller Challenge Oops. Done.
But it was only writing out the description for the QuiltCon16 entry that I realized how much I love this piece and how much I have grown with it. The chevron tire treads. Fairy Frost carbon black. Silver steel belts and blimps. Blue and yellow of Goodyear. The polymer hex- link shape. On point. Only machine quilting a self drafted tire tread pattern flawlessly fiting both top and the pieced back. Improvisational piecing. Couture Cotton is the best quilting solid made: silky hand, stunning palette.
Whether or not "Akron: Goodyear" is chosen for QuiltCon16, it is a winner.
