Layers was juried in to the FRESH2017 Summit Art Space Exhibit by Charles Beneke, Professor of Printmaking at University of Akron Mary Schiller Myers School of Art. One of 33 pieces by 29 regional Modern and Contemporary Artists, the exhibit.
" The works this year vibrate with with a sense of unease and trepidation- our world is unsettled; our political climate is diverse; big changes are impending."
" ... a well- put- together grouping of works that show flashes of special talent."
Anderson Turner, Akron Beacon Journal, January 22, 2017
"Fresh, which features contemporary art from 29 local artists, examines themes such as the U.S. election, cultural changes, personal identity, space exploration and more. The exhibit runs through Feb. 18."
Megan Becka, Cleveland Plain Dealer, February 9, 2017
Layers was created in June, 2016, featuring Imperial geraniums on my front porch. I knew immediately it would be entered, not whether accepted, in FRESH2017. Exhibit Curators are announced with Call for Entry, the theme is not. Printed on luxe metallic paper with a lustre coating, sent for custom framing well in advance of call for entry. The only piece I entered, Layers sat wrapped in kraft paper. Waiting.
June 2016 marked a period of profound personal transition for myself and my family. Even good things are stressful and uncertain. Only in hindsight is the effect on my art recognizable. Understood. My art is evolving. If one looks carefully, there are consistent threads of themes and elements. Still love nature and botanicals, but in the current political climate I need the weight and substance of architecture to tether me. Reassurance of the tangible Industrial relics in an era of ephemeral.
Perhaps, that's my new Artist Statement?
FRESH2017 is a personal and professional highlight. I am deeply appreciative and grateful. Not blogging about it until now, is due to my own role uncertainty: how to market oneself? Is it braggadocios? Is anyone reading my blog? Good, yet tenuous themes.
There are a few more pieces in the style as Layers. I'll be posting them in the next days. A welcome respite from the gray Akron winter.
