January 2017, I was invited to an all inclusive, behind the scenes photo shoot at the Akron Civic Theatre. Designed by John Eberson and built by Marcus Lowe, founder of the Lowe's Therarer group, The Civic is one of the few remaining "atmospheric" theaters. A Moorish Garden, decorated with elaborate plaster work, plant and vines, taxidermy birds, and clouds projected against tiny twinkle star lights set into a curved blue ceiling. Special lights created a sunset and sunrise golden glow effect at the beginning and end of features.
To stay culturally relevant and financially solvent, The Civic's programming has ranged from The Clash ( August, 1982) to touring Broadway shows, and local dance recitals and Tuba Christmas.
Sub basement to projection room, near roof. However, Civic undergoing electrical renovation during the shoot. Most period lobby lighting fixtures out for restoration. Construction lights and insufficient flash created " challenging" shadows.
When I shoot, I capture a site or detail frequently overlooked. Editing, I attempt to keep the image true to its essence; but, retain creative license.
